Quotes...
It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.
-Adam Smith
Economic Joke of the Moment
Q: How many economists does it take to change a lightbulb? A: Eight. One to screw it in and seven to hold everything else constant.

Grand Rapids Weather
The sun rose this morning, and is predicted to set again later this evening. Meteorologists are predicting steady daylight throughout this cycle of sun, ending upon sunset.
Speakers
We routinely bring in high caliber speakers to lecture on disparate topics relating to economics; examples include:
The FDIC presenting future career paths
Larry Reed on the Impact of Adam Smith
Joe Lehman explaining what a think tank actually does
Mike LaFaive discussing Michigan's Economic Development
Competitions
We enter the annual Fed Challenge in which we compete with other schools throughout the 7th district. We present our opinion on the economic outlook to a panel of research economists at the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago. Click on the Fed Challenge link above for more information.
Conferences
We do our very best to attend a professional annual conference; this year we will be attending the Midwest Economics Association's Annual Meeting at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, Illinois. Additionally we will be taking a tour through Morningstar as well as visiting the Chicago Board of Trade and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
Round Tables
We participate in round tables hosted at Grand Valley! In the past the Investment Portfolio Organization has hosted various round tables; in recent years they have extended an invitation to the Economics Club to participate in the lively discussion between local experts and students. We hope to continue sharing this exciting evening in future years.
Discussions
At periodic intervals throughout the year we will gather as a group to discuss different economic events; examples would include meeting prior to the FOMC meetings and discussing the whys and hows of what they're likely to do. Additionally we will at times focus on select works of the Nobel Laureates in Economics and discuss their findings and its relevance.
